Westwater CEO expects continued uranium price rise

Nasdaq-listed Westwater Resources, which owns uranium project in Texas and New Mexico, is upbeat about the uranium market and says he believes that prices will continue to rise in the near term. In a news release on Friday, CEO Christopher Jones laid out a case for higher prices detailing how spot market prices and volumes for uranium concentrate are outperforming this year.

Argentina Lithium walks away from Arizaro project

Vancouver-based Argentina Lithium will not be proceeding with the option agreement on the Arizaro lithium project in the Arizaro Salar in Salta province, the company announced on Friday, as it outlines a future strategy. The TSX-V-listed firm has determined that the high risk and potential reward for the project, which it acquired in January last year, was not suitable for the economics of the company.

Peabody announces $400m Alabama coal acquisition

US coal major Peabody Energy on Friday announced the $400-million acquisition of the Shoal Creek metallurgical coal mine, in central Alabama, from private producer Drummond Company. Located on the Black Warrior river, the mine serves the Asian and European steel mills with high-vol A coking coal and in 2017 sold 2.1-million tons.

Mongolian court says copper mine nationalisation broke laws

The Mongolian government broke laws during a controversial attempt to seize full control over the Erdenet copper mine, a local court said on Thursday, the latest ruling in a long-running ownership dispute over one of Asia's biggest deposits. The Mongolian Copper Corporation (MCC) has been fighting for more than a year to stave off the government's attempt to gain control of the lucrative Erdenet mine by forcibly taking over the company's 49% holding for about $400-million.

Chinese petcoke buyers turning to Russia, Mideast after US tariffs

Chinese importers of petroleum coke are buying more volumes from Russia and the Middle East due to a hefty tariff on shipments from the United States, previously one of China's main sources of the material used in aluminium and cement production. China slapped a 25% tariff on US petroleum coke, a byproduct of oil refining, from August 23 as part of its escalating trade row with the United States.

Poseidon signs Black Swan ore tolling agreements

Base metals firm Poseidon Nickel has found two potential sources of third-party feed for its Black Swan concentrator, which the company is touting as an alternative processing facility for stranded nickel miners following the closure of BHP Billiton’s Nickel West Kambalda concentrator. Private exploration company SulphideX and listed junior Estrella Resources have signed memorandums of understanding with Poseidon to process ore from their respective projects under ore tolling and concentrate purchasing agreements (OTCPA).

Centaurus resumes Salobo West licensing process

ASX-listed Centaurus Metals will resume the environmental licencing process for its maiden drilling programme at the Salobo West copper/gold project, in Brazil, after an earlier decision to deny the company a drilling and clearing licence was overturned. The key environmental agency responsible for the approvals, ICMBio, has reportedly reconsidered its preliminary findings handed own in May, and has now given the go-ahead for the licencing process to resume.

South32's Cerro Matoso mine wins appeal, will not pay damages

Colombia's Cerro Matoso nickel mine, owned by Australian miner South32, will not be required to pay damages to indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities after winning an appeal in Colombia's constitutional court, a court spokesperson said on Thursday. The court had previously ruled that waste emissions seriously affected communities in Cordoba province, including community members who had been diagnosed with lung and heart problems. It also said that some residents had high levels of nickel in their blood and urine.
