Cradle Arc secures working capital extension for Mowana

The holding company of the Mowana copper mine has secured a $4-million working capital extension from Fujax Minerals and Energy, which Aim-listed Cradle Arc has hailed as a “vote of confidence” in the Botswana operation. Leboam Holdings, a 60%-owned subsidiary of Cradle Arc, negotiated a 24-month repayment term, with a six-month payment holiday, scheduled to start from April 2019.

Brazil court orders Vale to pay damages to indigenous tribes

Brazilian court has ordered Vale, Brazil's largest miner, to stop its nickel-extracting operations in the northern state of Pará and pay damages to two indigenous tribes that live in the area. Vale, one of the country's biggest companies, will not be able to resume mining iron or nickel at its Onça Puma unit until it meets certain environmental requirements and presents plans aimed at mitigating and compensating indigenous peoples, Brazil's prosecutor-general's office said on Friday. The court decision was also on Friday.

PEA deems TriStar gold project in Brazil viable for 1.1Moz gold

A preliminary economic assessment (PEA) study, conducted by GE21 Consultoria Mineral on behalf of TriStar Gold for its Castelo de Sonhos gold project, in Brazil, highlighted life-of-mine recoverable gold of 1.1-million ounces, or an average of 120 000 oz/y. The Castelo de Sonhos project will require a capital investment of $184-million and is the TSX-V-listed junior’s flagship project.

Galantas private placement to raise up to £4m

Aim- and TSX-V-listed Galantas Gold on Monday announced a private placement of common shares, which should complete the equity element of funding required to achieve its 30 000 oz/y gold concentrate target. The private placement would be for a minimum of 64-million shares and maximum of 80-million shares, at an issue price of £0.05 (C$0.086) apiece for targeted gross proceeds of between £3.2-million and £4-million, or C$5.1-million and C$6.8-million.

Chile copper production seen growing by 4% next year

Chile is set to deliver steady production growth of 4% next year, as the risk of labour strikes decreases and mines are upgraded, Fitch Solutions Macro Research says in a report, also warning that declining grades pose a downside risk to its long-term forecast. Fitch states that Chile’s copper mine production is forecast to grow by 2% in 2018, to 5.4-million tonnes, on the back of strong production increases from major mines. Gemfields generates $28m from Singapore emerald auction

JSE-listed Gemfields has generated $28.4-million in revenue from last week’s rough emeralds auction, which 40 companies attended in Singapore. The company said on Monday that the proceeds of the auction would be fully repatriated to its 75%-owned subsidiary Kagem Mining and would be used to settle all royalties due to the Zambian government.

Kirkland appoints new CFO, VPs

TSX-, NYSE- and ASX-listed Kirkland Lake Gold has appointed David Soares CFO and Eric Kallio exploration senior VP, effective immediately. The company on Monday in a statement also announced a number of internal management changes, including outgoing exploration VP for Australia John Landmark to human resources VP, effective January 1, and outgoing Canadian operations VP Pierre Rocque’s appointment as technical services VP.

Stanmore gets an offer out of Indonesia

Coal miner Stanmore Coal has received a 95c a share takeover offer from Golden Investments, a company which is 51% owned by Indonesian coal producer Golden Energy and Resources and 49% held by Ascend Global Investment Fund. The unsolicited offmarket bid valued Stanmore at around A$240-million and offered a 14.5% premium to Stanmore’s five-day volume weighted average share price on the ASX.

TopTung makes a play for Canadian neighbour

ASX-listed junior TopTung has moved to acquire Canadian Nickel Corporation (CNC) to more than double its landholding in Quebec. CNC has previously entered into conditional agreements to acquire three advanced nickel/copper sulphide projects that are in the same district as TopTung’s own Alotta project.

Bathurst extends Rotowaro mine life

The share price of coal miner Bathurst Resources increased by 4% on Monday after the company announced that the mine life of its 65%-held Rotowaro project, in New Zealand’s North Island, had been extended by a further four years. The miner said that the mine life extension would be achieved through the development of a new resource at Waipuna West, which is within the Rotowaro operation’s current area of operation.

Lucapa sells more diamonds from Lulo

Diamond miner Lucapa Diamond Company has generated a further $4.2-million in sales revenue following the sale of 3 411 carats from its Lulo alluvial mine, in Angola. The company told shareholders that the parcel of diamonds achieved an average price per carat of $1 220, bring the total year-to-date sales of Lulo diamonds to $24.5-million at an average price per carat of $1 353.

BHP settles long-running ATO tax dispute over Singapore hub

Diversified miner BHP has reached a settlement agreement with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) on a longstanding dispute related to the company’s marketing operations in Singapore. As part of the settlement, BHP said on Monday that it would pay A$529-million in additional taxes for the years 2003 to 2018, without admission of tax avoidance.

Resources continue to drive Qld economy

The Queensland resources sector contributed A$62.9-billion to the state’s economy in 2017-18, a 14% increase on the previous year, the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) reported on Monday. In its ninth annual contribution report, the QRC noted that the resources sector generated one in every five dollars of the state’s economy, and one in every eight jobs.
