Justice League: Snyder Cut Stunt Video Shows Scary Batman vs Parademon Fight
A new look at Batman encountering a parademon in Zack Snyder's Justice League has been revealed in a new stunt video. After Zack Snyder left Justice League and Joss Whedon reshot and re-edited substantial chunks of the movie with almost 80 new script pages.
In the two years since Justice League's theatrical release, bits and pieces of the Snyder cut has come at a steady pace, revealing more and more about the original story, tone, and epic action of Zack Snyder's Justice League. Not only was it a much different story (and over 3 1/2 hours long), but there were several cut characters, including future Justice League members Martian Manhunter and a pre-Atom Ryan Choi, and the action, in true Zack Snyder fashion, would have been much more visceral.
One of the changes we found out about a while back was thanks to some concept art of Batman exploring the Gotham tunnels and discovering hanging parademon cacoons related to the human to parademon transformation process. When asked about the art, Snyder said it was deemed "too scary" to be included in the final cut, but thanks to a new stunt-vis video (and sprinkles of pre-vis) from Justice League stunt coordinator Freddy Bouciegues, we have an idea of what this scene would have looked like.
The video, designed by Bouciegues and fight coordinator Matt Rugetti, features Batman (played by Ben Affleck's Batman stunt-double, Richard Cetrone) exploring the tunnels and encountering a hanging cocoon. When he opens it up for examination, it reveals a parademon (played by stunt performer Kofi Yiadom), and a fight between the two ensues.
Portions of the fight line up with Batman's confrontation with a parademon during the tunnel battle in the theatrical cut of the movie, so this clip is a great example of how those original scarier concepts were cut out of the movie. While Batman's parademon confrontation survived in fragments, the discovery of the cacoon and "too scary" elements are still in place.
The clip from Freddy Bouciegues also includes little snippets of pre-vis as well, showing how the pre-production process relies on a number of techniques to concept a scene before it's ultimately shot. Zack Snyder is notoriously thorough in his pre-production process, meticulously storyboarding most of his movies himself, and the coordination with stunt team members like Bouciegues Rugetti to produce these concepts goes to show how much work went into Justice League without much of it ever even ending up on the screen in favor of much more hastily prepared alternatives.
