Arrowverse 2020 Crossover Story Is Already Planned | Screen Rant
The Arrowverse shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon - with a story idea already locked in place for next season's crossover event. Staring with Arrow in 2012, the CW's array of DC Comics-inspired shows has only grown exponentially in the almost decade since. Firstly, it produced such direct spin-offs as The Flash standalone series and the more ensemble-driven Legends of Tomorrow. While it began life on CBS, the shared universe also more prominently incorporated the cast of Supergirl from season 2 onwards. For a time, those served as the core line-up of the Arrowverse with an annual crossover becoming a staple of the world and serving to unite them once a year.
With the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, the interconnected shows took the concept to a whole new level. Based on Marv Wolfman's seminal storyline, the five-part saga served to bring CW newcomer Batwoman more centrally to the fore. It also introduced Black Lightning's titular hero into the mix for the first time. As if that wasn't enough, however, Crisis on Infinite Earths officially added such shows as Lucifer to the established canon and even established the DCEU as part of its multiverse with a crowd-pleasing cameo from Ezra Miller's version of Barry Allen. In terms of story, the 2019/2020 season crossover served as an end of an era and a fresh start - with the journey of Stephen Amell's Oliver Queen coming to an official conclusion and various disparate worlds merged into the now singular Earth-Prime.
Given all of that, fans could be forgiven for assuming that the combined universe might take a year off from such large scale adventures. According to Guggenheim, however, that will definitely not be the case. When one such fan broached the idea that Crisis on Infinite Earths might have been a crossover finale of sorts, the writer-producer replied on Twitter that they already know what story the next crossover will tell. Though Guggenheim initially referred to it as "next year's crossover," he later clarified that he had meant next season. Check out both tweets in the space below:
Each of the established Arrowverse shows were renewed earlier this year. Equally, they are set to be joined by some new additions in the form of a standalone Superman and Lois show starring Tyler Hoechlin as the Man of Steel and Elizabeth Tulloch as his Lois Lane. Meanwhile, despite Arrow concluding its eight-season run, one of the final episodes served as a backdoor pilot which saw Oliver Queen's daughter, Mia, take up his mantle. Unfortunately, it is currently unknown whether Green Arrow and the Canaries will be officially picked up - with an announcement expected sometime in May.
Unfortunately, Guggenheim neglected to elaborate or even offer the remotest tease as to what story will be. However, Crisis on Infinite Earths laid the groundwork for some interesting directions the next crossover could go. Given that all of the established heroes now exist on the same Earth and unaware that a new version of the multiverse exists, it will assuredly be a purposefully smaller scale adventure. Given the sheer herculean task of topping Crisis on Infinite Earths, that is probably for the best. That being said, it was no doubt be equally pleasing, especially with the tease that the Wonder Twins may be on the way. Whatever the case, however, it will no doubt be the subject of much speculation in the coming weeks, especially as each of the Arrowverse shows build towards their respective finales and new hints potentially emerge.
