MAFS: Katie Saw Derek As a Boy Because He 'Had Childish Goals & Ambitions'
Katie never hid her feelings when it came to her struggle in gaining an emotional connection with her husband Derek, often referring to him as a "boy" and never "taking initiative." Her overwhelming amount of complaints throughout this season of Married at First Sight left fans confused about her decision to stay married. In a recent statement to Screen Rant Katie shares why she saw Derek as a "boy."
Early in Derek and Katie's marriage there was an air of promise for a successful outcome. Derek showed a romantic side, giving his wife a memorable honeymoon and birthday. When difficult moments arose, Derek tried to placate Katie by attempting to give her what she wants. Katie described early in the season, "This guy is so perfect he's making me feel some type of way." Over time, as the couple began to get to know each other better, their relationship took a turn for the worse, arguments increased and Katie vocalized her unhappiness with Derek repeatedly. Complaints of his age, goals, and lack of initiative appeared to block the once blossoming relationship.
One of the most common criticisms was she felt Derek was a "boy." In a statement to Screen Rant, Katie elaborated more on what exactly she meant by her concern,
I saw Derek as a boy because I felt he lacked the emotional maturity and relationship experience, as well as a lack of follow through when he was given advice and “homework” from the experts.
He used a lot of pretty words but that didn’t show through in his actions with me in building our connection. In my opinion he had childish goals and ambitions that weren’t very concrete or mature and that was difficult for me to accept or like. There was a lack of awareness that I saw in Derek, as far as what it took to make the marriage work, and seemingly build a connection on an emotional level which is what made me see him as a “boy.”
Katie's explanation further raises the question of why she decided against a divorce. Her complaints have been consistent, she has repeatedly expressed their lack of emotional connection and even stated on Decision Day, "A part of me feels like my heart is not in it." It is an admirable action to fight for a love that one believes will work. The concern here is whether she felt all along it would ever work.
More specualtion about Derek and Katie's marriage has come about with the release of the trailer for the season 10 finale. Derek appears to have stated Katie had an affair during their marriage.
