Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Working Title References Classic Game Level
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is entering production sooner than later, and has been given a working title. The famous Blue Blur enjoyed big screen stardom earlier this year as Sonic the Hedgehog remains one of 2020's most notable films, with a few box accomplishments. Not only is it the highest grossing video game movie domestically, but it broke a 10-year record held by Marvel.
Perhaps the greatest aspect of Sonic the Hedgehog's success is that it was unexpected. Box office predictions weren't the highest, and the footage didn't appear as anything special. It was a surprising gesture of Paramount to delay the film after fans criticized the design for the character, but the movie itself still seemed average. However, on release day, many were pleasantly surprised. Although it had a newcomer-friendly atmosphere, it retained core attributes from the games. With a more game-accurate Robotnik and the arrival of Tails, the seeds for a grand sequel are in place. Fans will be able to see what's next for Sonic when the sequel hits theaters in April, 2022.
According to documents filed with the Directors Guild of Canada, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is entering production in March 2021. The document states production will run between March 15 to to May 10, 2021. A code name has also been given, and it's something fans will recognize. The working title is "Emerald Hill," which directly references the first zone in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 video game.
Although just a working title, this does make one consider what the sequel will be called. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would get the point across, but it would certainly be interesting if there's a subtitle to go along with it. As for the story, nothing has been said post-sequel announcement. However, director Jeff Fowler previously discussed what he's looking forward to doing if the first film's world continued. One of those things is the team-up between Sonic and Tails. Given the end-credits scene of the first film, fans can look forward to seeing the iconic duo on the big screen in 2022.
With so much lore packed across the games, it's fun to discuss what could happen in the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel. If the film follows the second video game, it may see Sonic and Tails on an adventure to defeat Dr. Eggman. The game also featured the first appearance of Super Sonic, something that was originally included in the first movie. Of course, the sequel can grab elements from other games, too, such as Knuckles and Metal Sonic. For now, it's all speculation until the first plot details for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are unveiled.
