The Nintendo Switch has seen its fair share of hidden gems and overlooked games. If a game is not a Mario or Zelda title, it can easily be overshadowed by the larger franchises. That doesn’t mean the Switch is just a Zelda machine, however, and there are plenty of amazing games that often get overlooked.
Some of the games on this list garnered widespread praise when they were first released but quickly fell off people’s radars as more games were released for the Switch. Despite their less popular nature, these games are great single-player and co-op experiences that players can sink hours into.
These hidden gems should not be lost to the growing library of games on the Switch though. Even though some of these games have bigger names attached to them, and no one would expect a Mario game to be a hidden gem, they are often overlooked thanks to more well-known games on the Switch.
As far as hidden gems go, players may be surprised to see a game with Mario in the title make the list. However, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is often overlooked thanks to the addition of the Rabbids from the Rayman series. The unexpected combination of the two franchises makes for a great tactical strategy game.
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is a quick strategy and puzzle game that players can easily pop in, complete a few missions, and put down. A wide variety of weapons, characters, and powerups adds new and creative challenges to the colorful battlefields.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is two games in one, Sega’s Puyo Puyo and Tetris. A follow-up to 2017’s Puyo Puyo Tetris, the sequel has all the charm of the original with some added game modes. The story mode of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is a wild ride, with a plot that spans multiple dimensions and a quirky cast of characters.
The addition of a new game mode called Skill Battle adds a unique twist to the game as well. This RPG-lite mode gives players control over the character's stats, skills, and more. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 really shines with its robust offline and online multiplayer system, allowing players to enjoy the games with friends.
Wargroove is a game that knows what its players want. For fans of the classic Advance Wars games, this turn-based strategy title hits all the right nostalgia-filled beats. Players control one of 15 characters, each with their own unique story and powers, here called ‘grooves.’ One of the nicest things about Wargroove is its sliding difficulty scale. If strategy games are a little intimidating, Wargroove lets players tone down the amount of damage units take, or increase the money players earn as a reward.
Golf Story is an indie game that combines golf and classic RPG elements into a charming game about reclaiming lost hobbies. Rendered in 16-bit-inspired graphics, Golf Story hits a lot more of the RPG elements than the golf ones. Golf Story is clever and funny, with characters players will love to hate and way more than just sand traps on the course. There are also golf-adjacent games to play, like disc golf and mini-golf. With both single-player and co-op modes, Golf Story brings a lot of fun in a small package.
Dragon Marked for Death is a side-scrolling beat ‘em up action RPG that pits players against a host of terrible monsters and gorgeous animation. It is developed by Inti Creates, the studio behind the classic Mega Man Zero and Mega Man ZX games as well as Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. A major appeal of the game is the addition of multiplayer modes, where players can team up to take on missions and kill more dangerous threats. With four unique characters to choose from, Dragon Marked for Death offers a ton of replayability and a challenging game for the Nintendo Switch.
