Bridgerton Season 2 Follows Anthony, Not Daphne, Confirmed
Bridgerton season 2 will focus on Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), Daphne's eldest brother. Based on Julia Quinn's popular book series, Bridgerton premiered on Netflix on Christmas Day and was an instant hit, becoming the streamer's fifth-biggest original series launch ever. Often described as Gossip Girl meets Pride & Prejudice, the show is set in Regency Era-London during the early 1800s. It follows the aristocratic Bridgerton family's lives during the competitive debutante season, all narrated by gossip writer Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews).
Season 1, which consists of eight episodes, is based around the first book of Quinn's series The Duke and I. It primarily follows Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest Bridgerton daughter, as she tries to find love, eventually falling for the Duke of Hastings, Simon (Regé-Jean Page). The period drama immediately captured audiences with its steamy romances and scandals, as well as its stunning costumes and ensemble cast. With the success of season 1 and the fact there are several books in the Bridgerton series, it did not come as much of a surprise the series was renewed for season 2, with filming set to start in the spring. With season 1 focusing mostly on Daphne and Simon, many speculated season 2 might revolve around different characters. Now, it's clear that will be the case.
Announced in the form of a letter from Lady Whistledown (and posted on Bridgerton's Twitter page), season 2 will focus on Anthony and his love life. "This author has been reliably informed that Lord Anthony Bridgerton intends to dominate the social season," the letter reads. This news might not come as a surprise to fans of the books, as Anthony's love life was the primary focus of The Viscount Who Loved Me, the second novel in the Bridgerton series. The season 1 finale hinted at the Anthony storyline, with the viscount setting out to find his own love interest. Fans of the novels will remember The Viscount Who Loved Me saw Anthony setting his sights on Edwina Sheffield before finding himself drawn to Edwina's older sister Kate, who is described in the novels as "the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom."
While no other details about the season 2 storyline have been revealed, the season 1 finale certainly set things up for an exciting story arc. A Bridgerton season revolving around Anthony will see some compelling events and new characters, assuming series creator Chris Van Dusen continues to stay true to the novels. Fortunately, fans won't have to wait too long to find out, as season 2 of Bridgerton is set to go into production this spring.
