Space Jam 2: Full Funko Pop! Squad Available For Pre-Order Now
Space Jam: A New Legacy Funko Pop figures and more licensed merchandise featuring LeBron James and members of the Tune and Goon Squads will soon be available for pre-order. The 1996 film saw Michael Jordan teaming up with the Looney Tunes to take on the alien Monstars and save the cartoon characters from a life of servitude at an amusement park. The sequel, which was stuck in development hell for years, features today's greatest-of-all-time taking to the court with Bugs and the gang, now in 3D. The plot concerns James saving his son, Dom (Cedric Joe), an aspiring video game developer, from a virtual world controlled by an AI called Al-G (Don Cheadle).
Much larger in scope than its predecessor, A New Legacy goes further than simply bringing the best of the NBA together with classic cartoons. Rather than a group of multicolored aliens, their opponents are the superpowered members of the Goon Squad, such as the elemental Wet Fire and half-snake White Mamba. Within Al-G's "Warner 3000 entertainment Server-verse," a whole slew of characters are featured from multiple franchises including the Iron Giant, Fred Flintsone, Khal Drogo, and King Kong, to name but a few.
Funko has revealed a series of merchandise including vinyl figures, Mystery Minis, T-shirts, and more featuring characters from the film. The first wave includes Pop! Movies vinyl figures of Bugs, Daffy, Lola, Marvin, Porky, Sylvester, and Tweety, flocked Taz, four different LeBrons, and Goon Squad members White Mamba and Wet Fire. Keychains of LeBron, Dom, Bugs, and Lola, a FunkoVerse game pack, Bugs and Marvin T-shirts with figures included, and Mystery Minis of Tune and Goon Squad members round out the drop. There's an impressive haul of collectibles in this announcement, and it will take an intrepid collector to hunt them all down. A few of the items are available only at Target, Amazon, Wal-Mart, or the Funko store. Fans would be hard-pressed to find anything missing from the collection unless they're still mourning the retirement of Pepé Le Pew. Warner Bros. announced that it would no longer feature the lecherous skunk in any upcoming projects, though a scene in which James teaches Pepé about consent was reportedly shot but never animated. Star Greice Santo offered $100,000 for the footage in which she is pursued by the skunk – a rare collectible in and of itself.
Given the scope of the film and all the characters that are being included, a few characters from the main squads are just scratching the surface of potential merchandising. With so many well-known properties being featured, more collectibles featuring some of those characters who are neither Tune nor Goon are likely on the way. Eager fans already have a plethora of plausible theories about how the Warner Bros. universe could figure into the plot. Only time will tell just how ambitious Space Jam: A New Legacy is.
