Suicide Squad 2 Star Describes Film As Brave & Insane
The Suicide Squad star David Dastmalchian heaps praise on the DCEU film, calling it insane, brave, and bold. Anticipation has been steadily building for The Suicide Squad, the DCEU's latest attempt at bringing the titular antihero team to the big screen, and it will finally debut next month in theaters and on HBO Max. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has brought a fresh, more profane tone to the film, which is a cross between a sequel to the 2016 Suicide Squad and a reboot. Gunn has enlisted a slew of eccentric comic book characters for this one, and the early looks have been promising.
The Suicide Squad will find a bigger, newer Task Force X embarking on another dangerous mission at the behest of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). This time around, they need to destroy a Nazi-era lab and prison, though the promotional materials for The Suicide Squad have confirmed there will be separate teams focusing on different things. The long list of newcomers include Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), and Dastmalchian's Polka-Dot Man, who has earned some attention online for his darkly comedic moments in the trailers.
Dastmalchian recently spoke to Slash Film about his various comic book movies, which also include The Dark Knight and the Ant-Man films. When it comes to The Suicide Squad, Dastmalchain joined many of his co-stars in praising the movie. "The movie is so powerful, bold, and just a very brave and insane film. It’s not like anything people have ever really seen before," he said. In referring to what Gunn brought to the movie, Dastmalchain added, "He pushes the boundaries in every way you can imagine – visually, thematically, violently, comedically, and emotionally. I read the script and fell deeply in love with Abner [Krill, Polka-Dot Man's alias]."
The stars of The Suicide Squad have been very open about their praise for Gunn and the film itself, with Joel Kinnaman calling it Gunn's best movie yet back in June. All of these positive words are adding to the overall hype for The Suicide Squad, and one just has to hope it lives up to expectations. After all, audiences were particularly eager for the 2016 movie as well, but it didn't hit the heights many expected it to.
Of course, it is far too early to assume how The Suicide Squad will turn out, and it is already very, very different from the first film. Dastmalchian's comments are promising, and they hint that the movie will be a departure from typical comic book movies. Gunn looks to have taken some big swings with The Suicide Squad, from killing off several characters to including DC villain Starro. In an age when comic book movies frequently get dinged for playing by the book, The Suicide Squad can be a breath of fresh air. Good thing there's only about a month left before it arrives.
