Porsche Taycan EV Recall Over Battery Issue: What You Need To Know
Porsche is recalling around 43,000 Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo vehicles over an issue where the electric vehicle suddenly loses power. The completely electric Taycan is the company's entry into the EV market and, with a newer product like this, problems are likely to occur. However, this is not the first time Porsche has had to face a recall with this particular line.
The Porsche Taycan is an electric vehicle that's supposed to showcase pure power. The Taycan starts at around $80,000 and can go well into $200,000, making it far more expensive than other options. According to the NHTSA, the Turbo S has been recalled twice before, once in March and once in May. The first recall focused on suspension issues where the components weren't tightened fully, leading to a higher possibility of a crash. The second recall revolved around incorrectly forged front lower trailing arms, wherein it could cause a loss of vehicle control, also possibly resulting in a crash.
The current recall involves the power train. According to Porsche, the Taycan can experience a power train shutdown, effectively causing the vehicle to completely lose motive power. Porsche also explains that the issue can happen sporadically. The fix is a beefy software update, but this one can't be performed over the air (OTA) like a lot of other software updates. Instead, the update needs to be performed physically at a Porsche dealership. The software update is only supposed to take around one hour, so while it's not a big job, it does fix a big issue. As to be expected, there is no cost to the owner for the fix.
According to Porsche, only a handful of vehicles have been experiencing the issue out of the 43,000 already made. As for those in production, the update has already been applied to those EVs, meaning the situation only applies to vehicles that have left the factory. On the NHTSA website, it looks like thirteen complaints have been filed recently for the 2021 Taycan Turbo S, all having to do with either the electrical system or the power train. Odds are, the average Porsche Taycan isn't going to experience this issue, but owners should get the system updated nevertheless. Recalls like this aren't uncommon with Tesla having gone through its own from time to time.
The Porsche Taycan recall doesn't affect a lot of people, but the important thing is that the issue is being addressed. With an increasing number of manufacturers looking to get involved with the EV market, there are going to be issues and problems that surface along the way. Fortunately, Porsche has gotten to this issue before it became a much bigger problem.
