The film sports a strong cast that includes Taylour Paige and Fear the Walking Dead star, Colman Domingo.
The film tells the story of Zola, a waitress who is convinced by the larger-than-life stripper Stefani to go on a road trip to Tampa, suggesting that they can dance at several clubs along the way and make some money. The journey becomes a descent into chaos with not only Stefani but Stefani's boyfriend, along with Stefani's pimp. Things quickly escalate into a nightmare weekend for Zola, filled with drama and violence. It's a tale so unbelievable and unique, it would never cross someone's mind while watching that this could possibly be based on a true story.
Despite the film taking quite a few liberties, Zola is, in fact, based on true events. Zola is based on a viral Twitter thread from 2015. The real-life Zola recounted her captivating tale in a 148-tweet thread that trended worldwide. As for what the film gets right, just going off of the Twitter thread, it's not a whole lot beyond the basic story beats. How Zola and Stefani (named Jessica in the thread) meet in Zola is accurate to the original story, but the events of the actual road trip differ from the true story.
While Zola's wild road trip in real life did contain a lot of unbelievable and potentially illegal antics, the movie's depictions of the true-story events are generally fictitious, using Zola's original true story more as a basis than anything else. For example, Zola contains a scene where Zola is forced into sex work by Stefani's (played by Riley Keough) pimp, X (known as Z in the thread) — but in reality, Zola wasn't in that hotel and kept away from that part of the trip. Other scenes are exaggerated for dramatic effect, like when X fatally shoots a man towards the end of the film. This was the story that Z recounted, but Zola insists it really did happen and that she heard the gunshot.
So while there is some truth to this adaptation, the film is generally more of a dramatization of the events of Zola's Twitter thread rather than a step-by-step recreation — but the movie still gets the basic elements of the story correct. Zola and Jessica's meeting and the regression of their "friendship" in particular are portrayed in an accurate light according to Zola's story. In this regard, Zola is less in line with a film like The Woman in the Window that's pure fiction with slight factual influences. Even with liberties taken, this is still a story worth reading up on and a film worth watching.
