Undertale Music Used By Circus Performing For Pope Francis
The indie role-playing game Undertale made an unusual appearance during a circus performance for Pope Francis. Developer Toby Fox's beloved 2D title released back in 2015, impressing gamers with its deep narrative themes, engaging combat, intriguing story and memorable musical score. Undertale's music was all composed by the game's creator, which led to Toby Fox composing a Pokémon Sword and Shield song for the franchise's 2019 entries.
Undertale casts players as a young human child who falls into the Underground, a magical realm of monsters who were banished from the surface. Journeying through the Underground, the player is introduced to a colorful cast of characters including Flowey, Toriel and Sans. These figures may attempt to aid or hinder the player throughout the experience, and when encountering enemies players can choose to either kill them in battle or spare their lives. Choosing to kill or spare certain enemies can have major effects on Undertale's storyline, with the role-playing indie title featuring multiple different endings based on player action. Within the game's large cast of characters, Undertale's skeletal character Sans is particularly renowned for his dialogue, difficult boss fight and iconic boss music.
As reported by IGN, and posted to Twitter by Ultima, the Catholic Church's Pope Francis was recently entertained by a circus performance accompanied by the Undertale song "Megalovania." Pope Francis holds a weekly General Audience, with entertainment often performing for the holy figure and his congregation. This particular circus act, which saw a skilled juggler manipulate objects with their feet while sitting upside-down, was humorously set to Sans' battle song. The fast-paced tune memorably accompanies Sans' notoriously challenging boss fight, which occurs if the player kills every single monster they encounter before the end of the game.
While Undertale has left an undeniable mark on the video game industry, developer Toby Fox continues pushing ahead into uncharted territory. The indie creator's latest project, titled Deltarune, borrows many of Undertale's mechanics and gives them a unique spin. Deltarune is being released in chapters, with Fox currently uncertain about exactly how many chapters will be made or how long the game will take to complete. The first two chapters of the unique role-playing experience are currently available to play, with multiple future chapters in active development.
Undertale has become an indie game icon, but it is still strange to see Pope Francis listening to Sans' boss fight music. The rest of the circus act is equally unusual, however, so the presence of "Megalovania" may actually be the least bizarre aspect of the skillful performance. It is doubtful that His Holiness has much time for gaming, but Undertale's masterful score is powerful enough to move a wide variety of listeners.
