CUPERTINO, Calif.—Alcatraz AI is positioning facial authentication as the next evolution of access control - and its investors appear to agree. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company recently closed a $50 million funding round, capital it plans to use to scale its go-to-market strategy, expand internationally and deepen its presence in high-security verticals such as data centers, financial institutions, airports and other forms of critical infrastructure. “What this round was really about is scale,” said Tina D’Agostin, CEO of Alcatraz AI. “We’ve seen strong tailwinds in the market, particularly in data centers, financial services and critical infrastructure.” Fueling scale in high-security environments Alcatraz currently serves seven of the 10 largest artificial intelligence (AI) companies, with data centers emerging as one of its fastest-growing segments as access control requirements become more layered, D’Agostin says. “Data centers are essentially the banking vaults of our era,” she said. “Protecting them requires multi-factor authentication at every layer of the perimeter. Facial authentication fits naturally into that environment, especially because it can also address tailgating.” Turning tailgating into a real-time problem Tailgating - when an unauthorized individual gains access by following an authorized user through a secured door - remains one of the most persistent vulnerabilities in physical security. D’Agostin notes that traditional badgebased systems offer little protection once a door is held open, while facial authentication enables realtime detection and alerts. “Historically, tailgating was forensic - you looked at video after the incident occurred,” she said. “Now, security teams want real-time intelligence at the door so they can respond before a breach happens.” Biometrics enter the mainstream Beyond data centers, Alcatraz is seeing adoption across airports, utilities, universities, life sciences and commercial real estate. The company is also extending its technology into executive protection and residential use cases as identity-driven security becomes more common. That shift is being helped by changing attitudes toward biometrics. A recent YouGov survey commissioned by Alcatraz found that 73% of Gen Z respondents are comfortable using biometric technology. “People are already using facial biometrics billions of times a month on their phones,” D’Agostin said. “That familiarity is carrying over into buildings.” Authentication vs. recognition - and why it matters Confusion persists between facial recognition and facial authentication - a distinction D’Agostin says is critical, particularly around privacy and regulation. “Facial recognition is typically surveillance-based,” she said. “We do facial authentication. We convert a map of the face into a mathematical value. We’re validating that value, not identifying who you are.” That privacy-first architecture allows Alcatraz to deploy globally while complying with regulations such as the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). “Because it’s anonymous and consent-based, it really takes the regulatory conversation off the table,” D’Agostin said. What it means for integrators For integrators, Alcatraz’s platform fits both greenfield and retrofit environments, supports Wiegand and the Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) and deploys quickly using existing cabling, D’Agostin says. Many customers begin with badge-plus-face deployments before moving to face-only authentication. Looking ahead, D’Agostin believes traditional proximity badges are nearing the end of their lifecycle. “Badges have had their era,” she said. “Over the next five years, we’ll see them coexist with facial authentication, but ultimately, proximity technology should be phased out. Using your face is more secure, more convenient, and, when done right, more private.”
