Re: NFL and Prem
SpikeI do agree in some ways that if we were going to change the nature and face of football over here - now would be the time to do it.
It won't happen of course, as soon as this is over with - the players will have their agents back on the case and fans will be screechingly demanding that their clubs start spaffing money up the wall.
There are too many differences between the NFL and our football system for it to work as simply as you suggest though.
For one thing - these NFL drafted players aren't 16 / 17 year olds who may be contracted to go and play for clubs at the other end of the country - they are 22/23 year olds who have already been through the college system, gained experience of life and living away from home and are better prepared.
To have that over here we would have to have youngsters going into University football leagues and thence onto a draft system to become professionals.
There are loads of changes that could, and should be made to our system over here, but that one's a step far too far at this stage.
You would need every country to buy into it too. Wouldn't happen.
Another country would off the 17 year old a contract. NFL works because its in essence a one country game.
