Destruction of the football pyramid? (16 replies)
Our very own domestic super league. Not sure what the answer is really. There is plenty of blame to go around as EFL clubs have to take responsibility for their profligate spending. Granted that is done trying to compete with newly relegated clubs and when they come down and blow £20m on a striker it pushes up the value of mediocre Championship players, affecting the rest of us. A terrible cycle really.
But to remove parachute payments surely means relegated teams will implode. Unless they reduce their premier league spend; but then they can't compete; and the cycle continues. What's the solution?
It does make you think that at some point a Premier League 2 will come to be. Championship clubs will push for it hoping that league 1 and 2 clubs will be so insignificant as to make their fans' voices unheard. Will we pledge solidarity with them if/when that happens (praying we're still at least a Championship club?).
One thing that does strike me as interesting: "The Premier League is set to save more than £80m in unspent parachute payments this year after two of last season’s relegated clubs, Norwich and Watford, earned immediate promotions."
I see no reason why in such circumstances that money can't be redistributed amongst championship clubs.
