They found former professional footballers were 3.5 times more likely to have a neurodegenerative disease cited as a cause of death. The 3.5 times bit sounds scary until you see the findings. The death rate with this cause was 0.5% for the general population and 1.7% amongst ex-footballers. So we can say 98.3% of the ex-professional footballers did not die due to heading a ball. It also concluded:
"Although footballers had higher risk of death from neurodegenerative disease, they were less likely to die of other common diseases, such as heart disease and some cancers, including lung cancer. Reflecting these findings, the study found that deaths in former footballers were lower than expected up to age 70 and higher than expected over that age."
