Anyway I finally caught up with Limehouse Lizzy last night. Thought you might like to see a review. I’m sure syntax and grammar could be better, but literacy isn’t my strongest. Still hope you find it interesting.
Third gig of the year, second artist. Before I start my review properly, I need to say a few words about the original band. Of course tonight was Limehouse Lizzy who are a Thin Lizzy cover band.
I saw Lizzy twice. First on the Black Rose tour at Birmingham Odeon in 1979. Gary Moore and Scott Gorham were the guitarists. It was a fantastic evening. Steve Jones of the Pistols made an appearance too! The second time was at the Cornwall Coliseum in the 80’s. Amazing band live.
I saw Limehouse Lizzy a long time ago in Plymouth and was impressed with them and they have played Tavistock Wharf several times. Unfortunately until tonight I kept missing them.
Now I know a few of you might be a bit “sniffy” about tribute bands, but these guys are on another level. If you get a chance you MUST go!
I went with brother in law and my nephew. The gig was a sell out, so after a burger and a pint we got a place in the middle and towards the front. As the guitar of Queen’s We Will Rock You faded, the band came on. Greetings were given to the crowd, and straight into Jailbreak. Waiting for an Alibi and Bad Reputation followed in quick succession with Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed afterwards. We were on the way. The two guitarists, both playing the true rockers axe - Les Pauls!
The lead singer Wayne Ellis looks similar to Phil Lynott but also has his mannerisms. He said Rosalie was on the list, everyone cheered but he then added in the second half! However he told us we would know the next one, we did Dancing in the Moonlight.
They then cranked the rock up a notch with Suicide. The melodic Do Anything You Want to, was followed by the rocky Killer on the Loose and China Town before finishing the first set with the superb Don’t Believe a Word.
The second set started with Got to Give it Up and Black Rose, both from the same album. It was about this time that a couple of guys started shouting for Emerald and Whiskey in the Jar. We were told that Whiskey wasn’t on the list. (It didn’t stop them shouting for it though!)
We were then told that due to time we had a choice of ballads. It was either Still in Love With You or Parisienne Walkways. The decision was made by audience cheering. Still in Love with You was chosen. I love this track it’s a proper blues ballad with a couple of stonking solos. They nailed it, it went down a storm.
Of course, they then went straight into the lovely Parisienne Walkways. What a loss to music is Gary Moore.
Are You Ready and Cold Sweat followed, with shouts for Emerald and Whiskey continuing. They were delighted as the intro to Emerald was then played! Again it went down a storm.
Wayne then took a few minutes to thank everyone for selling out the gig and how much they enjoy playing Tavistock.
Another tribute to Gary Moore with Out in the Fields followed by the wonderful Cowboy Songs, including Coyote howls! (Also more cries for Whiskey!) Set 2 was concluded with the classic Boys Are Back in Town.
Cheers and stomps for an encore, the band returned. Once again we were thanked. Again we were given the choice of Rosalie or Whiskey in the Jar. It was close, but Rosalie prevailed. It’s a superb track by Bob Seger, nailed on the night. Job done. Well not quite, on completion of Rosalie, they went straight into Whiskey in the Jar to finish a superb night.
If you like Thin Lizzy, you must see these guys. They are like the real thing!
