Re: Adam Johnson again
SpikeAmy TI’ve just seen the clip for the first time too.
I think it can be argued the coming-together with Johnson’s teammate a half-second before could have thrown Petgrave off balance, I don’t know much about the physics on ice at that speed but I don’t think it’s as cut and dry as he was just trying to leave one on him.
Yeah there is a bump just before, but in normal circumstances that just knocks you over. It doesn't make you fling yourself into mid-air and throw your feet (clad in ice skates) straight into another player's head. He also seems to twist to make sure of contact.
Off balance I can completely get, there's no way I see how he performs that movement naturally.
Being bumped and knocked over is a regular occurrence in ice hockey - you brace, take the hit - get up and carry on.
Obviously this will all be argued out in court, perhaps the guy will end up found not guilty. But as I and others have said, whatever happens he will know the truth. And either way he has to live with killing somebody.
That was my thought too - it looked like a proper assault to a layman like me, and doesn't look probable that a contact like that bump could set in motion a subsequent action like his. But my movement speed is more reminiscent of a tortoise than an ice hockey player and, like you, I haven't much of a clue as to the physics of ice skating movement, so I do hope that it was an accident. Whatever, he's got to live with that for the rest of his life - worse, of course, if it was intentional contact.
