The Defense Criminal Investigative Service performs an integral role in protecting America’s warfighters by investigating matters critical to our country’s defense. As the law enforcement arm of the Department of Defense Inspector General, DCIS investigations help deter fraud, waste and abuse within DoD programs and operations.
Since its inception in 1982, DCIS investigations have resulted in more than $21 billion returned to the U.S. government in recoveries, restitution and fines. DCIS, working closely with state and federal law enforcement partners, participated in over 3,000 arrests and secured over 8,000 criminal convictions. In addition, 3,692 contractors and companies were suspended and 4,368 were debarred from doing work with the federal government.
DCIS prioritizes investigations that significantly impact DoD operations, to include:
- Procurement fraud
- Public corruption
- Product substitution/counterfeit parts
- Health care fraud
- Illegal transfer of sensitive DoD technology

Special Agent Careers
DCIS is the criminal investigative arm of the DoD IG. Employment with DCIS offers individuals a unique opportunity to serve their country by conducting investigations that ensure DoD remains capable of deterring war and defending our nation.
DoD IG is competitive with other federal law enforcement agencies in terms of career and pay progression.
To be considered for a DCIS special agent position, an individual must:
• Be a U.S. citizen
• Be between 21 and 37 years of age
• Pass the complete applicant screening process, which includes an interview battery, drug screening, medical exam and a physical fitness test
• Pass an extensive background investigation
• Possess excellent communication skills
• Possess a 4-year degree from an accredited college/university, or have three years of work experience in the federal criminal investigative or law enforcement fields
• Complete the 12-week Criminal Investigator Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
