Robert K. Brown, USAR (Ret.) has lived a life of incredible adventure. He served as a Green Beret in Vietnam, trained troops from other countries and fought communists alongside them in hotspots around the globe, and has diligently defended the Second Amendment via his long-held seat on the NRA Board of Directors. Brown’s publishing career began when he founded Panther Publications, which later merged into Paladin Press. In 1974, RKB sold his portion of Paladin Press and shortly thereafter founded Soldier of Fortune Magazine. Always willing to use the platforms he created in support of what he believes without the slightest regard for the fallout sure to follow, Brown has been praised and damned in equal parts by those dumbstruck that such a person or personality actually exists. Now 87, RKB has elected to part with a number of his special firearms and memorabilia accumulated over the years. The purchaser of each item will receive a personalized letter from RKB discussing its known history, along with a vintage “Communism Stops Here” poster of Brown cradling his sniper rifle during his time in El Salvador from the archives ofSoldier of FortuneMagazine. Created in 1964, serial number 340477 features a 22-inch plain barrel with tapered crown, Buehler adjustable base with one-inch low rings, jeweled bolt body and extractor, nickel bolt handle with single checkering panel and hollow bolt knob, serrated bolt release button, 26 lines-per-inch wrap checkering, checkered steel grip cap, scalloped cheekpiece with bold shadow line, slight Monte Carlo profile and a Pachmayr recoil pad. A trigger shoe is attached to the original trigger. MARKINGS: “K. Stegall .338 W.C.F.” appears on the barrel (chamber was cast and fired to confirm as .338 Winchester Magnum), “1/28/64” appears on the underside of the barrel and “K. Stegall” is stamped in the barrel channel. DIMENSIONS: Weight is 8.4 pounds and length-of-pull is 13.5 inches. CONDITION: The bore is strong and bright. The barrel was shortened from its original length, as one hole where a front sight was secured is visible near the muzzle. The plug screws usually found on the left side of the action are missing. Metal finish is approximately 97 percent, with only faint traces of wear. Serial number 163901 wears a 16-inch barrel (18 inches with brake), front night sight blade, Burris 2.75x Scout scope with plex reticle, synthetic stock (textured) and flip-up butt plate with trap door. DIMENSIONS: Weight, with optics, is 9.8 pounds. Length-of-pull is 13.2 inches. CONDITION: The bore is bright and strong, suggesting little use. Exposed metal finish is at least 95 percent. Stock paint is at least 95 percent, with minor spotting from handling and storage. The scope is optically clear, with a bit of external edge debris on the ocular lens that does not effect performance. The front ramp (night sight) has dimmed. MARKINGS: “NM 062” appears on the right front sight ear, “NM” rides the barrel and “308 Genesio IL” is marked on the barrel under the operating rod. DIMENSIONS: Weight is 10.6 pounds and length-of-pull is 13.2 inches. CONDITION: The bore shows moderate roughness yet remains bright. Bedding compound is visible at the base of the action.
