Assassination attempt on Mexico City Police Chief who was shot, injured: two bodyguards dead
Mexico City’s chief of police Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch was shot and injured in an assassination attempt when heavily armed gunmen attacked his entourage, killing two of his bodyguards, authorities Reuter’s reported. Residents said heavy gunfire rang out for several minutes during the attack in Lomas de Chapultepec.
Chief Harfuch blamed the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) for attempting to assassinate him
“This morning we were attacked in a cowardly way by the CJNG,” García tweeted, using the Spanish-language acronym for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Mexico’s most violent criminal group, WTOP reported.
“Two colleagues and friends of mine lost their lives. I have three bullet wounds and various pieces of shrapnel. Our nation has to continue standing up to cowardly organized crime. We will continue working.”
CJNG is one of the most powerful cartels in Mexico and the Department of Justice considers it to be one of the five most dangerous transnational criminal organizations in the world, responsible for trafficking many tons of cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl-laced heroin into the United States, as well as for violence and significant loss of life in Mexico, according to the DOJ, U.S.
