Leavine Family Racing (LFR) and Michael McDowell continue to improve during the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) season, as they earned their fifth Top-25 finish in a row at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) on Sunday.
Richard Petty Motorsports announced today that IMSA Ford driver Billy Johnson will pilot the No. 43 Smithfield Ford at Sonoma Raceway and fill in for the injured Aric Almirola. Fresh from competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Johnson will make his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start this weekend, but this isn't the first time he worked in NASCAR. Johnson made five starts in the NASCAR XFINITY Series and scored a career-best eighth-place finish in Montreal in 2012.
The Furniture Row Racing driver posted a sixth-place finish, his fifth straight top 10 and a finishing average of 3.8 in the last five races. He also won the first two stages at Michigan, lifting his series’ leading stage wins to 10 after 15 races. His playoff bonus points total of 20 also leads the series.
An unscheduled green-flag pit stop put Erik Jones behind the 8-ball early in Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 but a bold strategy and determined drive by Jones earned the No. 77 5-hour ENERGY Extra Strength Toyota team a 13th-place finish at Michigan International Speedway.

Though Martin Truex Jr. finished sixth in Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway the final result wasn’t met with contentment with the Furniture Row Racing driver, who won the first two stages and had the dominant car until late-race inside lane restarts spoiled his chance of a victory.
After having to start at the tail of the field due to pit-road speeding penalty, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. picked up 22 positions in the final 46 laps to score his first top-10 finish in nine Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) starts at Michigan International Speedway. In 15 MENCS starts this season, Stenhouse has scored six top-10 finishes.

Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 42 Cars 3 Target Chevrolet SS, captured his second Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series (MENCS) victory of the season by winning the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway (MIS). It was Larson’s third MENCS career victory in 127 races, his second win and fourth top-10 finish in eight races at the 2-mile track. He led 96 of the 200-lap/400-mile contest and regained the lead in the current point standings.
Ryan Blaney and the Omnicraft Ford struggled with handling early in the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway but battled back using two-tire pit strategy to be in a position to contend for the win but a late-race brush with the wall sent last week’s race winner back to a 25th-place finish.
The NASCAR Camping Truck Series headed to Gateway Motorsports Park on Saturday night. It was the fourth race for the track since its return in 2014. The race was action packed and featured different pit strategies. Chase Briscoe won his first career pole in the series, alongside him was race winner John Hunter Nemechek.

While he dominated the day and led the most laps, despite failing to win a single stage, Kyle Larson took the lead on a late restart in the closing laps of the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway and held off challengers to score the victory.
