Swiss ice hockey team given heroes’ welcome

Thousands of supporters have welcomed the Swiss ice hockey team in Zurich on Monday following its silver medal win at the World Cup in Denmark. The crowd waited for the team and its staff to step off the plane at midday before they went on a stage outside the airport to be applauded by enthusiastic fans. Sri Lankans in Switzerland demand justice

Eleven thousand children from Sri Lanka were adopted by Western couples in the 1980s, some with fake identities. Hundreds of children who came to Switzerland are now trying to discover whether they were illegally smuggled into the country. According to the Rundschau current affairs programme on Swiss Public Television, SRF, small children were stolen in Sri Lanka, then sold or adopted. Swiss firms in Iran fear US sanctions

Major Swiss companies are reportedly preparing to withdraw from Iran following United States moves to impose economic sanctions on Tehran and threats of punishing companies which ignore the policy. Several Swiss newspapers on Sunday reported that Swiss firms in Iran have stopped making new business contracts two weeks ago. Swiss President addresses WHO anniversary meeting

The annual assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) has opened in the Swiss city of Geneva, focusing on improving access to medical services. The five-day meeting, which comes amid a new outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo hopes to adopt a strategic plan to help countries meet the health targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. Popular Swiss homeless pastor dies

Ernst Sieber, arguably Switzerland’s best-known pastor and champion of the homeless has died at the age of 91. Born near Zurich, he first worked as a simple farm hand before he studied theology and later led parishes of the Protestant church in and around Zurich for 25 years.
