Most asylum-seekers unaccounted for after leaving Swiss centre

The majority of asylum-seekers who left a federal departure centre near Zurich have vanished without a trace, the Swiss government concluded after testing accelerated asylum measures over 15 months. A total of 649 asylum-seekers were admitted to the Embrach departure centre between the time of its opening in March 2017 and early June 2018. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) said on Wednesday that 309 out of the 503 asylum-seekers who left the centre did so in an uncontrolled manner. In other words... Читать дальше...

Responsible Business debate could cause ripple effects globally

A decision by the Swiss parliament this week on an initiative to hold companies accountable for their impacts on human rights and the environment could send a message on how far governments are willing to go. Set for Thursday in the House of Representatives, the debate will centre on a counter proposal to the Responsible Business Initiative. If adopted, it will put Switzerland at the forefront of a rapidly growing trend to embed corporate responsibility into national laws. The initiative has already been the subject of heated debate. FIFA boss Infantino seeks re-election

FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, says he wants to stand for a second term in office next year. The Swiss national took over from disgraced predecessor Sepp Blatter with the organization mired in scandal. Infantino, a former General Secretary at UEFA, was voted into the position in February 2016 promising a raft of reforms to end years of corruption at football’s world governing body. He became a last-minute contender for the post after his boss, Michel Platini, bowed out amid claims of corruption. Читать дальше...

Parliament deals expat Swiss another banking blow

Postfinance, the banking arm of the state-run Post Office, will not have to offer the same services to the Swiss living abroad as to their compatriots in Switzerland. The parliamentary decision is another blow to Swiss expatriates who have seen banking services from their home country diminish in recent years. The Organisation of the Swiss Abroad (OSA), which represents more than 750,000 Swiss who live in a variety of countries, said it was “disappointed” by the Senate vote on Wednesday. Since the 2008 financial crisis... Читать дальше...

‘Discriminatory’ Swiss ID birthdate practice to end

Swiss passports and ID cards will no longer discriminate against people who do not know their date of birth. Until now, the birthdate section on such documents recorded 00.00, a practice which created a problem for holders at border controls and even when shopping online. From now on, a fictitious date will be entered on Swiss identity documents when people cannot provide proof of their date of birth. This typically affects migrants whose documents are held by their country of birth and are impossible to obtain. Читать дальше...

Art in Basel is much more than Art Basel

Art Basel, which opens on Thursday, and its circus is mainly about the arts market: a perfect setting for packaged artworks, buyers and sellers, whereas artists are just supporting actors, at best. It hasn’t always been like this. When it started, back in 1970, Art Basel was an ingenious idea of a group of gallerists to bring together most of the different layers of actors and agents in the then expanding arts world (and market). Success was immediate. Already in 1976, the number of galleries... Читать дальше...
