Geneva joins climate protests in France

Several thousand people have taken to the streets of the Swiss city of Geneva to call for a radical action against climate change. Speakers at the rally which was attended by an estimated 3,500 people, criticised the politicians for ignoring the urgency of the situation. Last Monday, the United Nations panel on climate change published its latest report recommending more ambitious goals to counter global warming. Saturday’s demonstration, organised by an alliance of non-governmental organisations... Читать дальше...

Swiss government eyes trade deal with Washington

Finance Minister Ueli Maurer says the government is pushing for negotiations with the United States on a bilateral free trade agreement. Maurer said he was optimistic that the Swiss government would approve a mandate for talks before the end of the year as the moment was right for a new attempt after a previous effort failed more than ten years ago. “The US export market is very interesting for Swiss farmers,” Maurer told the Swiss News Agency on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). What the statistics don’t say about teachers’ salaries

How much does a schoolteacher earn in Switzerland? The federal system means that there are big differences between the cantons. There is also a gap between theory and practice. If you’re a Kindergarten teacher, you’d be better off working in the French-speaking canton of Geneva than in the southern Alpine canton of Graubünden: you’ll get CHF97,000 ($97,700) per year in the former, CHF60,000 in the latter. For primary school teachers, the story is the same: CHF97,000 in top payer Geneva, versus CHF66,000 in Italian-speaking Ticino. Читать дальше...

Lopreno: ‘A philosopher who thinks with light’

After publishing his photographic collection, "Voyage en Suisse" ("Journey to Switzerland"), Geneva photographer Patrick Gilliéron Lopreno continues his wanderings on the outskirts of an iconic Switzerland with "Eloge de l’invisible" ("Praise for the Invisible").  The photographer's new work has been enriched by an encounter, as unlikely as it is successful, with writer, publisher and polemicist Slobodan Despot, who wrote the preface. Left-leaning Lopreno and rightwing Despot shared their views on the Swiss landscape... Читать дальше...
