January finally drew to a close last week, meaning the transfer window has shut its doors and it is time to reflect on Spurs’ business.
This month could be described as a frustrating one for Spurs fans, as it so usually is.
However, I believe the month ended on a much more positive note than many would have anticipated after the halfway point in January.
So was Tottenham’s window a success or was it another Levy disaster class; this time with a new scapegoat to share the blame.
Incomings
For the first half of the month, it really felt as if once again Spurs were not going to make any signings.
It left many fans rightfully worried about Conte and how he would feel; this is a manager who is known to walk if his demands are not met.
However, in the end, I believe he will be happy.
Whilst we did miss out on Adama after being heavily linked all month (ESPN), I don’t believe this was the disaster everyone made it out to be. I personally have never been his biggest fan.
And ultimately, we all knew the Luis Diaz links (Sky Sports) were a classic Levy PR masterclass; I don’t think many were falling for that one this time.
As for the players we did sign, I was quite pleased.
From what I have seen of Rodrigo Bentancur, he is a player who will fit Conte’s system perfectly and exactly what our midfield was crying out for.
Personally, I am very excited to watch Dejan Kulusevski play.
Named Serie A young player of the year a few years ago, he has a high ceiling, and I don’t believe his time at Juventus can be properly judged, Juve are not what they once were.
Under Conte, I believe these two relatively young players can see great improvement and bring something different to Spurs.
Outgoings
Overall, I believe Spurs did much better business on their outgoings as opposed to the incomings.
We cleared a lot of deadwood and I believe this was a warmup for the summer window.
Lo Celso needed a move desperately and quite frankly I wasn’t too upset to see him depart. Hopefully, it will be permanent in the summer.
As for Ndombele, I do believe his move to Lyon is beneficial for all parties involved. Hopefully, he will find himself again and come back to Spurs with a better attitude.
Alternatively, a string of good performances might see us recoup some of the money we paid for him in the form of a permanent summer move.
Gil being loaned out felt unnecessary; if it was an English club, I would have understood, but we already know what he can do in the Spanish league.
Now, this is tough to write. Firstly, I want to make it clear Alli will forever be one of my favourite Spurs players. I am grateful for everything he brought to the club.
It was time for him to leave, and ultimately good business. However, seeing his goodbye video did leave me extremely emotional.
I really hope he finds himself again and becomes the player we all know he can be. He embodied the spirit Poch brought to the club and gave me some of my best memories as a Spurs fan.
However, onwards and upwards!
Overall opinion
Many Spurs fans were disappointed when the window closed, however, I was satisfied.
January is a tough window. To get two players in and clear out some unwanted players was positive, and I truly believe the club was laying down the foundations for a big summer.
There is no way we don’t back Conte; Levy knows he has too!
As well as this we had a better window than all our top-four rivals, with none of the clubs around us making any notable signings.
