Harry Winks has admitted that Tottenham allowed Southampton to ‘suffocate’ them during Wednesday night’s timid defeat in the Premier League.
Spurs were beaten 3-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and were second best to an energetic Saints outfit for the majority of the encounter.
Antonio Conte’s side led through an own goal by Jan Bednarek before Southampton responded courtesy of Chelsea loanee Armando Broja to send both sides level heading into half-time.
Spurs nudged ahead again when Heung-min Son tapped in from an excellent Lucas Moura cross, but the visitors were incensed that a foul on Broja had not been called in the build-up after a strong aerial challenge by Emerson Royal.
But Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men refused to give up and scored twice in three minutes through Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams from excellent James Ward-Prowse crosses to complete a late turnaround.
Winks, who struggled for much of the match alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in midfield, believes Spurs were ‘too passive’ in allowing Southampton to dictate proceedings and claims his side needed to be more resolute without the ball.
He said (via Football.London): “It was very frustrating. It was a poor performance and result. When we’re not playing well but leading, we need to find a way of not conceding.
“If we’re not playing well, we need to defend well, be resilient and hard to break today. Today we were too passive, too easy to play against and defensively as a team it wasn’t solid enough.
“I wouldn’t say it was a wake-up call. We haven’t been getting ahead of ourselves. We know it’s a process.
“We’re playing in the Premier League against top opposition. They’re a top side, they’re strong and aggressive and we have to be at our best to beat them.
“Unfortunately we were poor. We let them play, we let them suffocate us and it wasn’t a good enough performance.”

Tottenham ended up playing like the away side and afforded Southampton way too much respect on the ball. Even when Spurs had the lead, when they didn’t really deserve it, it was then a case of individual errors that caused the game to be thrown away in such poor fashion.
