Hugo Lloris has backed Antonio Conte to help Tottenham reduce the gap in quality between themselves and the clubs currently above them in the Premier League.
Lloris, who recently signed a two-year contract extension (Sky Sports), is now well into his tenth season at Spurs since joining from Lyon in 2012.
The France international captain has clocked up a wealth of experience in that time and is now just shy of reaching the 400 appearances mark for the club (Transfermarkt).
Lloris spent a large chunk of his Spurs tenure under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino, but also worked alongside coaches Andre Villas-Boas, Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo during his time in North London.
The 35-year-old has never managed to secure any form of silverware under any of the aforementioned names and, in that time, Spurs have somewhat been left behind by the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea o the quality front.
However, Lloris is now backing charismatic Italian coach Conte, who was appointed in November, to turn the club’s fortunes around with the side starting to get a firm grasp of his intense methods.
Lloris told The Times: “This league is so competitive. There are so many big clubs and to compete with the Manchester City of Pep Guardiola, the Liverpool of [Jürgen] Klopp or with Chelsea, with Manchester United [is not easy].
“There’s nothing that I regret in my Spurs career because I’ve always seen players giving their best and managers trying to get the best from the players.
“The club is working in a good way. And now we have Antonio Conte to get everything onside and try to reduce the gap with the best.
“His CV speaks for itself as a player for Juventus, and as a manager for Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan. Everywhere he went, he won.
“He has a great energy, a great passion for football. He’s got his own concept in terms of training sessions and way of playing.
“We know exactly what we have to do with and without the ball. He’s very demanding. He has this winning mentality and is trying with his coaching staff to build something strong for the next few years at Spurs.”
Spurs Web Opinion
We are seeing what Conte wants to achieve at Spurs set-up wise from his first few months in charge. The overall play has been much better, but there is definitely still a long way to go. If the club listens to him and gives him support, there shouldn’t be any reason why the team can’t target bigger things going forward.
