Alasdair Gold has claimed that Antonio Conte has not been surprised by Tottenham’s recent struggles as the Italian always knew the difficulty of the task that lies ahead at the North London club.
Until a week ago, it seemed as though the Tottenham players were starting to get used to the demands of Conte’s system and the team looked to be on an upward trajectory.
However, two back-to-back losses at home have come as a major setback to the club’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League this season.
Even before the recent defeats, Conte had made it clear that he feels there is a gulf in terms of quality between the Tottenham squad and the best teams in the Premier League (Sky Sports).
Following the defeat to Wolves on Sunday, the Spurs boss urged the Tottenham fans to reset their expectations for the rest of the season ahead (Sky Sports).
Gold has now said that while Conte has found the job to be a little tougher than he originally expected, it is the club’s transfer business next summer that will dictate whether he feels Spurs can match his long-term ambitions.
When asked if Conte could walk away from the job on a Q&A on Football.London, the journalist responded: “Conte has made it clear in public the level at which he thinks the club is currently at and he’s certainly been no different behind the scenes.
“So nothing will really have been a shock to him, even if he’s probably found things a bit tougher than he would have expected from the outside.
“As we’ve said before, the summer and the scale of Spurs’ ambition is going to be crucial to deciding just how long Conte is going to stick around and how much he feels he can achieve what he wants with the North London outfit.”

Conte is certainly a world-class manager but he is quite tactically inflexible and does not steer away from his tried and tested system too much. Unfortunately, the current makeup of the Spurs squad is not a particularly good fit in certain areas for the system that the Italian wants to deploy.
The club have shown in January that they are prepared to fully back Conte’s ideas by letting the likes of Ndombele, Lo Celso and Dele leave. So, I fully expect them to adhere to Conte’s vision and add a couple of wing-backs, a midfielder and a centre-back or two in the summer.
