Alasdair Gold has said that Tottenham Hotspur could decide to loan out Dane Scarlett at the start of next season in order to fast forward the striker’s development.
There is plenty of excitement at Spurs surrounding Scarlett, who signed his first professional contract with the North London club back in March of last year (official website).
The 17-year-old, who made his senior debut for the Lilywhites last season, has been handed a couple of opportunities in the Europa Conference League this campaign.
The youngster scored 17 goals and registered nine assists for Tottenham’s Under-18s last season but he has been restricted to just six appearances for the Under-23s this season, partly due to injuries (Transfermarkt).
Some Spurs fans might have been hoping to see Scarlett get more minutes for the first-team this season since the club do not have a recognised backup to Harry Kane but that has not come to pass, with the youngster not having featured once under Antonio Conte.
Gold has now claimed the Lilywhites might loan out the teenager for the first half of next season, along with the likes of Brooklyn Lyons-Foster, Marcel Lavinier and Tobi Omole.
When asked on a Q&A on Football.London about the Spurs academy players who he expects to go out on loan next season, the journalist responded: “Depending on what happens this summer in terms of incoming players, Spurs could perhaps decide to give Dane Scarlett a half a season out getting regular first-team football.
“Although, there’s a feeling among some that he will be more beneficial to Tottenham if he sticks around and continues to develop.
“He really has so much potential and that’s why he’s permanently training with the first team.
“Among the U23s, Marcel Lavinier could do with a loan move next season to get senior minutes as could players like Tobi Omole and potentially Brooklyn Lyons-Foster when he returns from injury.
“Elsewhere it’s mostly players who have already had one or two loan spells who will head out again if they remain at the club.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is understandable why Spurs fans are excited about Scarlett but the reality is that it is impossible to predict young players’ development curves at such an age.
While some look like world-beaters in the Under-18s and never quite go on to become good enough for the top-flight, others like Harry Kane can be late bloomers.
Given that Scarlett is only 17, I do wonder if Spurs would want him to play with the Under-23s for another year before loaning him out to the lower leagues.
