Kieran Maguire has claimed Tottenham could launch their own NFL team but doubts the club would currently be able to finance such a project.
Spurs have immersed themselves in the American football scene following the opening of their new stadium in 2019 and have secured a 10-year deal to host up to two games every season (Football.London).
The North London club is now reportedly eyeing up even bigger things and could launch a bid to host the Super Bowl in 2026 to boost its global profile (Daily Mail).
Finance expert Maguire was asked whether Tottenham’s involvement with the NFL could lead to the club pursuing a move to create its own team at some point in the future.
While he admitted it is a real possibility, he held back on such suggestions, claiming Spurs would not be able to afford such a venture at present, which would cost as much as £2 billion to set up.
Maguire told Football Insider: “There’s nothing stopping them from launching an NFL team. They could buy out an existing franchise and transport it to London. From the NFL’s perspective, that would have some appeal.
“The challenge from Spurs’ perspective is that the asking price is likely to be north of £2bn.
“It would effectively have to be a reverse takeover because that’s close to or bigger than the value of Spurs itself.
“I don’t think the NFL owners would object. They get to make a lot of money and the opportunity to see their sport competing in a different market.
“From an operational basis, it could work. The challenge is the money it would take to buy out an existing team.
“The only other option would be if the NFL decided to expand its operation and include a couple of new teams dotted around the world.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham’s involvement with NFL has been good for both sides in recent seasons but this suggestion of creating a team seems a bit far-fetched at present. It’s a venture that costs a lot of money and will be valued just as much as Spurs will be, if not more.
