Matt Doherty highlighted Tottenham Hotspur’s intent to keep the pressure on Leeds United as one of the key reasons for their 4-0 victory at Elland Road yesterday afternoon.
Antonio Conte’s side travelled to Yorkshire on the back of Wednesday evening’s disappointing 1-0 loss at Burnley which halted all momentum of last weekend’s win at Manchester City.
Conte made two changes from the defeat at Turf Moor with Doherty replacing Emerson Royal at right wing-back and Harry Winks taking the place of the injured Rodrigo Bentancur in the middle of midfield.
Winks played a key role in the opening goal when he released Ryan Sessegnon down the left flank and played the ball across the penalty area which Doherty did well to control his shot into the back of the net to bag his first goal for the north Londoners.
Spurs continued to threaten the home goal and got a second five minutes later through Deklan Kulusevski and added another before half time when Harry Kane scored from an acute angle.
After the break Spurs had further chances and rounded off the win with a fourth five minutes before time after Kane played Heung-min Son through on goal and the South Korean made no mistake with his effort.
Doherty told BBC 1’s Match of the Day (26/02/22 at 23:00)
“We came out of the traps pretty fast today and even when the first goal went in, we didn’t take our foot off the gas.
“We went for the kill and obviously got the second. We wanted a reaction after what happened at Burnley and I think we got that.”

This was one of Doherty’s best performances in a Spurs shirt and hopefully he is given the chance to impress again in the FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough on Tuesday evening.
