Antonio Conte has revealed that he likes Matt Doherty because he remains committed no matter whether he is starting games or not.
The Irishman has only played a bit-part role in North London this season, with new signing Emerson Royal occupying the right-wing-back role more often than not.
Doherty has only appeared nine times in the Premier League and clocked up just 411 minutes in total (TransferMarkt). This is compared to Royal’s 20 games and over 1,400 minutes (TransferMarkt).
However, following his display against Leeds United at the weekend, which was arguably Doherty’s best match in a Spurs shirt, he overtook the Brazilian in terms of goal involvements.
Doherty now has one goal and two assists in the Premier League (TransferMarkt), while Emerson Royal is yet to score and has just one assist to his name (TransferMarkt).
Conte believes that Doherty has ‘improved’ recently and he understands he can be an important part of the team if he keeps working hard.
The Spurs boss said (Football London): “Doherty is another player that is improved. He has worked a lot.
“I like him because if he plays or if he doesn’t play he is committed and his attitude is always at the top. He understood that he can have an important part of this team.
“With Emerson on the right, but Doherty can also play on the left. I was pleased to see him at this level, also Ryan Sessegnon.
“Now we have recovered Sergio Reguilon. We are improving, we are working hard, when there are defeats we have to learn and continue to improve in many aspects.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
Tottenham bought Doherty as a wing-back who could get goals and assists. He failed to hit the ground running when he was forced to play in a back four, but this new Conte system could benefit him, especially with a left-footed Kulusevski in front of him.
