Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has played down any suggestion that Antonio Conte could walk away from Tottenham Hotspur before the season comes to an end.
The Italian hit the headlines following Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat at Burnley on Wednesday evening when he gave a brutally honest post-match assessment in which interviewer Sam Matterface suggested that Conte was considering his position in north London (talkSPORT).
His Tottenham side bounced back in the best possible way on Saturday with a convincing 4-0 win against a sub-standard Leeds United, who have since parted company with their manager Marcelo Bielsa.
Whelan believes that Conte’s comments at Turf Moor were more of a result of the frustration of suffering another defeat and insisted that it is pivotal that the club can finish in the top four and secure Champions League football in order to be able to attract top calibre transfer targets during the summer transfer window.
He told Football Insider: “I don’t think he will quit.
“I think his comments in midweek were more out of frustration. He is frustrated by the lack of consistency.
“Champions League qualification will determine how much money he can spend in the summer and what calibre of player he can bring into Tottenham. You can only get that quality of player if you are in the Champions League.
“I’m sure he has been promised money but if you are in the Europa League you have to go for the band B of players rather than the band A.
“It has been stop and start at Spurs and that’s the most frustrating thing for Conte. It is vital that they finish in fourth.”

It would be highly doubtful that Conte would walk away from the project before the end of the season since it would not only dent his reputation somewhat but also see him take a financial hit.
Conte has to learn to try and keep his emotions under control following a result which has not gone to plan, or expect the media circus to continue.
