Micah Richards and Gary Neville were embroiled in a heated debate over Antonio Conte following Manchester City’s 4-1 win against rivals Manchester United earlier this evening.
The pair were on punditry duty for Sky Sports and as part of the post-match analysis at the Etihad Stadium, former City defender Richards questioned why Manchester United had not decided to look to appoint Antonio Conte to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
After Tottenham parted company with Nuno Espirito Santo following a 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester United, they wasted no time in moving for Conte after missing out on the Italian in the summer.
United turned to Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis until the end of the current campaign to try and steer the ship until the summer.
When Richards criticised the decision to appoint Ragnick to manage the Old Trafford outfit, Neville asked the 33-year-old what they should have done instead, to which Richard said: “Gone for Conte, Conte was available before he went to Spurs. He was the best available manager at the time.”
Neville replied after holding his head in his hands with: “They did not want him, I agree that they did not want him. Conte is not a manager for Manchester United. He comes in for one or two years and does a great job.
“They’ve been there with Jose Mourinho and right to appoint either Pochettino or Ten Hag on a long term project and needed somebody to get to the end of the season.”
"All of his credibility as a manager has gone out the window." @MicahRichards and @GNev2 argue about why Ralf Rangnick was brought in as a interim manager and not the likes of Antonio Conte pic.twitter.com/1FCikJCB80

Neville, albeit a great pundit can often allow his affinity for Manchester United to cloud his judgment. Conte would have been a great appointment for United and it appears instead the hiring of Rangnick is backfiring with them greatly at risk of missing out on a top four finish.
