Robbie Fowler has urged Liverpool to snap up Harry Kane, insisting the Tottenham star’s ability to drop deep and link up play would make him a perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Kane has not only found his goalscoring boots since Antonio Conte arrived at Spurs but the 28-year-old has also been one of the Premier League’s best playmakers over recent months.
The striker demonstrated his vision and his passing range once again against Newcastle on Sunday as Spurs demolished the Magpies 5-1.
With Kane running into the final two years of his contract with Tottenham this summer (Transfermarkt), there has been plenty of speculation over the striker’s future, with Manchester United reported to be keen on snapping him up (The Athletic).
Fowler believes that Manchester City are likely to go after Erling Haaland this summer and suggested that Liverpool should thus look to prise Kane away from Spurs.
The former Reds striker wrote in The Daily Mirror: “I was the same at Liverpool. I had a period where we were the nearly-men like Tottenham, were in the conversation, but always fell short to the serial winners of Manchester United and Arsenal.
“It hurt. And I won’t lie, I did think about leaving because I was sounded out by both clubs. Harry Kane is in the same position.
“He almost joined Manchester City, and I have no doubt the biggest clubs will be back in for him this summer. I’d be amazed if Erling Haaland doesn’t join City, so he won’t go there, but there will be others.
“United will be in, for sure, and this is a bit left-field, but I’ve said before that Liverpool could do worse than go for him, because he’s got that ability to drop deep like Firmino, and he can guarantee goals.”
Fowler insisted that Kane might feel that he has a much better chance of winning trophies at Manchester United than he does at Spurs.
The former England star added: “So he has a question to ask: Are Spurs closer now to winning trophies? I think objectively, and without appearing to put them down, most people would say they’re further away than before.
“He’ll be 29 in July, so while I’m not saying it’s his last chance given that players now can go on for much longer at the top level, it’s his optimum chance. I know he’ll have that ambition to win things.
“City would virtually have guaranteed it, but if that’s not going to happen, then I’m sure he’ll have the inner belief that tells he can be the catalyst for the likes of United.
“And I know Tottenham fans will be saying, ‘Why can’t he be a catalyst for us?’, but it’s a judgement call he’ll have to make this summer.
“Which is the bigger club, for a start, and what do both clubs need? It’s stating the bleeding obvious, but Spurs already have him, and they’ve won nothing.
“I loved Liverpool, but I left them, because of ambition. It was an ambition to play games in my case, but I went to Leeds because I genuinely believed I could be the difference for them as they challenged for honours.”

I do not think Kane would be tempted to join Manchester United this summer, particularly given that they are set to miss out on Champions League qualification.
Liverpool are unlikely to be able to afford a deal for the England captain and so, I think Man City are once again the ones to be wary of.
I would not be surprised if Guardiola told the City board to prioritise a deal for Kane over Haaland, as the 28-year-old is a perfect fit for City’s system.
