Opinion: Player ratings from Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa
Tottenham Hotspur earned another three points and scored another four goals this evening as they took the outright lead in the race for fourth.
Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on against Aston Villa:
Hugo Lloris – 9 – A few of his saves were unconventional as he failed to keep hold of the ball, but Hugo was the wall that kept Aston Villa at bay in the first half. In the second half, the saves weren’t as regular, but they were still there when needed. HUGO!
Emerson Royal – 7 – Struggled to pick his passes out wide on the right and Villa got a lot of joy in behind on their left in the first half. In the second half, he was a lot more positive and solid defensively.
Cristian Romero – 7 – The two sides of Romero’s aggressive style this week. The Argentine gave away far too many needless free-kicks that Villa created chances from in the first 45, then he completely bossed things in the second half.
Eric Dier – 7.5 – He has been so good at marshalling that back line in recent weeks, but it was all over the place in the first half today, with Villa finding lots of joy in behind. Came good in the end though and his individual defending was actually very good.
Ben Davies – 7 – Struggled to play his way out from the back in the first 45, much like Emerson. However, he did have a couple of nice last-ditch defending moments to save Spurs. In the second half, his passing was extremely neat and tidy.
Matt Doherty – N/A – Went off injured after 20 minutes, unfortunately. Hopefully, it was just an issue with pain and not a serious problem.
Rodrigo Bentancur – 8 – He is known for picking passes between the lines into Kane and Son, but he really struggled with the Villa press in the first half. However, when the pockets appeared in the second 45, he controlled the tempo effortlessly once more.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 6 – Similar to Bentancur, he struggled to break into the Villa half. Getting booked in the first half for a tug back also reduced his ability to get stuck in. In the first 20 minutes of the second half, Hojbjerg ran the show and got Spurs on the front foot.
Dejan Kulusevski – 9 – Largely a passenger in the first 45, beyond giving away the odd silly foul. In the second half, he won the game for Spurs. His fine finish was the turning point in the match, and his unselfish assist for Son was the icing on the cake.
Heung-min Son – 10 – Ultimately the difference-maker. A hat-trick, all of which were superb finishes. He has had his critics this season but Son was immense today.
Harry Kane – 9 – Villa marshalled Kane really well when he dropped into the pockets and he gave the ball away a fair bit in the first 45. But those pockets opened up as Villa tired and Kane ran the show from deep as usual. His awareness is second to none in the PL.
Substitutes:
Sergio Reguilon – 7 – Came on for the injured Doherty. Shared the struggles of the rest of the defence initially but performed much better in the second half. Nice to have him back.
Steven Bergwijn – N/A
Lucas Moura – N/A
