Antonio Conte has called for more protection from referees when it comes to challenges in the Premier League after Matt Doherty was injured last week, implying that some opponents go out there to damage people.
This comes after Tottenham Hotspur hit a major speedbump in the race for top four as they failed to earn a single point against Brighton at home this afternoon.
With the Lilywhites playing in the early kick-off, Antonio Conte’s men had the chance to put the pressure on Arsenal and go six points clear before the Gunners even took to the pitch against Southampton.
However, Brighton, who also took three points off Arsenal last week, had other ideas. Graham Potter’s side started the game on the front foot and never really let it slip, with Spurs only having flat periods of possession without any clear chances.
Leandro Trossard finally made Spurs pay in the dying embers of the match in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium sunshine, while Steven Bergwijn missed a great chance to level the scores just after.
Asked about the match and Matt Doherty’s injury after a Matty Cash challenge last week, Conte said (Football London): “Sometimes I think the referee has to pay more attention and protect players.
“I understand you go and take the ball but if you take half the ball and half body you may damage the players. I think for the safety of the players the referee has to pay great attention.
“If you damage the opponent I think you get the punishment. I know that if I want to cause my opponent damage I know the right time to do it, I was a player.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
Despite what some pundits and fans seemed to be implying, the top four race was never done. Spurs were three clear and Arsenal had a game in hand. Conte’s side are not going to be able to coast the run-in and they need to avoid displays like today if they are to have any hope.
