Antonio Conte has revealed that Tottenham must learn how to avoid defeat in the event that a win cannot be secured, something they failed to do against Brighton today.
Tottenham came into the match today with a chance to go six points clear of their closest top-four rival, but they fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Brighton.
The Lilywhites failed to get out of first gear despite playing at home in front of a packed out Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where the sun was shining and the atmosphere was positive.
Brighton started the better of the two teams and went close with some half-chances, and we never really saw a Tottenham response as we did against Aston Villa last weekend.
The match continued to follow a pattern of flat Spurs possession followed by a dangerous Brighton attack, which eventually resulted in a late goal from Leandro Trossard. Steven Bergwijn had a last-gasp chance to draw level off the bench, but spurned his opportunity.
Conte said (Football London): “For sure not a good result for us. A lesson that we can learn today that there are games that if you are not able to win you have to not lose.
“It was very clear that today it wasn’t our day. It was important to get three points before our rivals players in the race for the Champions League but the game was very difficult.
“It was a tactical game for both sides and Brighton were very good at closing the space. We moved the ball slowly. I think that we are able to do much better than today.
“Perhaps a draw was more fair but Brighton played a good game. If you win against Arsenal and Tottenham away you know it’s a good game.”
On the lack of shots on target, he added: “I think that Brighton were very good to close every space and we were not good in finding the space. In difficulty, we have to try to find the solution. Also with a single player but today we can do much better.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
I would argue that Brighton completely deserved the win. Spurs played within themselves and looked like they were taking part in a fatigued pre-season friendly. I’m really not sure where all the energy went, but Tottenham deserved nothing.
