Jermaine Jenas has insisted that the loss against Brighton came as a reminder that Tottenham are still far away from becoming a top team.
Spurs had been plagued by inconsistency until February but Antonio Conte’s men seemed to have put that behind them over the past couple of months.
The Lilywhites had won six of their last seven Premier League matches heading into the clash on Saturday and their forward line of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski had been on fire.
However, the Seagulls managed to stifle Spurs’ forwards and prevented the North Londoners from creating any clear-cut chances.
Graham Potter’s men walked away with a deserved 1-0 win thanks to Leandro Trossard’s late strike and Jenas believes the performance and the result came as a reality check for his old side.
The former Tottenham midfielder told BT Sport: “I think they maybe needed a reminder of how far away they are Tottenham. They didn’t turn up today at all.
“They’ve been brilliant for a number of weeks now and every now and then you’re going to come across a performance that you don’t quite understand.”
Jenas also lavished praise on Potter for the way he set up his side, insisting that Brighton are lucky to have the 46-year-old in charge.
The pundit said about the Seagulls boss: “He is a manager that is just taking the club from strength to strength.
“His recruitment is good, his style of football is good, and I remember there was a time this season when they were on that run where people were questioning him.
“I’m thinking, Brighton fans need to remember that this guy is about to achieve something historic with this football club, and with the performances and results now you’re almost lucky to have him in my opinion.”

Potter tactically outclassed Conte on Saturday despite having inferior players. The 46-year-old has shown over the past couple of years that he is not just a one-trick pony like Marcelo Bielsa or Daniel Farke, and is capable of making tactical adjustments to nullify opposition threats.
