Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp offered a blunt opinion of the way Tottenham Hotspur defended against his side at Anfield last night.
Antonio Conte’s side weathered the early onslaught from the Reds as they looked to keep themselves firmly in the title race but eventually saw their 12-game winning league run at Anfield come to an end against a steadfast effort from the north Londoners.
It was Spurs who took the lead against the run of play in the second half when Hugo Lloris found Emerson Royal, with the Brazilian lofting the ball forward into the path of Harry Kane.
The England captain drove forward and played in Ryan Sessegnon on the left-hand side of the Liverpool area to square the ball across the six-yard box for Heung-min Son to tap into the net.
Liverpool’s equaliser came with some good fortune when Luis Diaz’s effort took a wicked deflection off Rodrigo Bentancur to wrong-foot Hugo Lloris and head into the bottom corner.
Throughout the match, there were a number of heroic defensive efforts led by Cristian Romero, while Ben Davies also got a vital block on a Mo Salah effort and Eric Dier, Emerson Royal and Sessegnon also performed admirably with their defensive duties.
While Spurs were solid at the back, they were also a threat on the break and squandered a brilliant opportunity to take all three points when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg fluffed his lines with a header which should have either looked to have directed goalwards or into the path of Harry Kane, only to do neither.
When asked if he was impressed with the way Spurs defended, Klopp told Football.London: “I’m sorry I’m the wrong person for that, I don’t like this kind of football. But that’s my personal problem. I think they’re world-class, and I think they should do more for the game.
“I think the game against Liverpool they had 36, 38% possession. But it’s my problem. I cannot coach it. So that’s why I cannot do it. So yes, world-class players block all the balls, really difficult.
“Fine, whatever. fine, absolutely fine. I just can’t. I respect everything they do, but it’s not me.”

Klopp’s comments smack of sour grapes after seeing his title hopes hit the buffers against a Spurs side who failed to roll over and if anything, will come away equally as disappointed not to have secured all three points in their quest to beat Arsenal to a top four finish.
