Antonio Conte has refused to commit his future at Tottenham after leading the club back into the Champions League on the final day of the season.
Spurs needed just one point against relegated Norwich to secure their place at Europe’s top table, but earned all three comfortably as they thumped the Canaries 5-0 on Sunday.
Heung-min Son scored twice to reach 23 Premier League goals to share the Golden Boot award with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, while two from Dejan Kulusevski and one from Harry Kane ensured a comfortable victory in Norfolk.
With Spurs now set to rub shoulders with the elite on the European stage, all eyes will be on whether Conte, who is expected to meet with chairman Daniel Levy and managing director Fabio Paratici (Football.London), will remain on board into the new campaign.
And when pressed on clarifying his position at the N17-based club, Conte was coy with his response and simply referred to the contract he signed until 2023 when he was appointed back in November.
He said (via Football.London): “I’m under contract until next summer. I signed a contract for one year and 7 months. I’ve enjoyed a lot my time in Tottenham. It was a big challenge in a modern club, with a fantastic stadium and training ground and I knew the situation.
“On the other hand you know I am a person who has ambition and I like to fight for something important, to lift trophy.
“For me, this is a trophy and I’m very happy. Then we’ll see. I always said to you that at the end of the season I’d speak to the club and find the best solution.
On when he will speak to the club, Conte added: “Now I think for me, the club and the players it’s good to have three, four, five days of rest and then the mind will be very clear.
“Then you can consider the whole season. I think you have to be very calm before talking. Now there are a lot of emotions in mind, my heart, for me, for the club and for everybody.
“For this reason, it’ll be very good to rest for four or five days and then have a good meeting with the club to find the best possible solution.”
Spurs Web Opinion
This is a smart move from Conte as it keeps the power on his side ahead of the summer and will likely send a message to the Tottenham board.
It could mean that he may be satisfied with leaving if he is not supported appropriately in the transfer market as he has constantly admitted Spurs need to make improvements.
Either way, his future will be sorted at some point when the dust settles, but the onus is on Levy to keep him on board and happy with how things are going.
