Dejan Kulusevski has urged Antonio Conte to stay at Tottenham after helping the club secure its place in next season’s Champions League.
Knowing a draw against Norwich would be enough to end their campaign on a high note, Spurs thumped the relegated Canaries 5-0 at Carrow Road to cement fourth in the Premier League.
Kulusevski got the scoring underway for Spurs in the first half after some good work from Rodrigo Bentancur before Harry Kane added a second shortly ahead of the interval.
The Swede notched his second with a stunning curling effort before Heung-min Son thumped in two of his own to share the Premier League Golden Boot award with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (BBC Sport).
And looking back on Tottenham’s dominant performance in Norfolk, Kulusevski admitted he is pleased with the way his side finished their season.
Kulusevski told BBC Sport (live blog – 22/05/22 at 17:59): “Very good. This was exactly how I hoped it would happen and it’s even better. We did what we had to do. The season is finished, I can’t wait to go and celebrate with my family.
“We were very excited. It’s never 100 per cent sure in football. Anything can happen.”
While tallying twice against Norwich, Kulusevski was also at the centre of a slightly embarrassing moment when given the chance to pad Tottenham’s lead in the second half.
After rounding goalkeeper Tim Krul, the 22-year-old failed to sort his feet out with an empty net at his mercy before scuffing his effort and seeing the danger cleared away.
Although he made up for the gaffe with a beautiful strike shortly after, his hopes of a hat-trick came to an end when he was replaced by Lucas Moura.
Reflecting on that moment, he said: “I felt embarrassed about what happened before. I thought I can’t finish the season like that. Those are my goals.
“I was just happy because the season was over. I did everything I could and I’m happy with how I played these four months.”
On Spurs teammate Son winning the Golden Boot, he added: “I had a chance to shoot and saw Son and thought I can’t shoot. We’re very happy for him.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It was a gruelling season for Spurs but they have found a way to end on a high note and make their return to the Champions League.
The team has been in such good form for the final stretch of the campaign and that is down to Conte getting the players playing the way he wants.
Kulusevski in particular should be very happy with the way he has performed as his influence on the team since his arrival has been very noticeable.
