Sport Italia journalist Rudy Galetti has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are very much in the race for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.
Nunez is one of the hottest properties in European football this summer on the back of a season where he scored 36 times across competitions (Transfermarkt).
Spurs are one of the clubs to have been credited with an interest in the Uruguay international (The Athletic), with The Sun claiming last month that the Benfica star would prefer to join the likes of Spurs and Arsenal over other suitors.
Last week, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold named the 22-year-old as one of six strikers that Tottenham have their eye on this summer.
The journalist revealed that Spurs were also monitoring Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrick Schick and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Galetti has now taken to social media to state that Nunez will leave Benfica this summer and is bound for the Premier League.
The journalist added that while Manchester United are currently favourites to sign the centre-forward, Spurs and Newcastle are ‘fully in the race’.
Darwin #Nunez will leave #Benfica in the summer – as reported in Feb – and his future will be in #EPL.
#MUFC are the front-runners, #NUFC and #THFC are fully in the race. No decision has been made, but there's a certainty: the 's next club won’t be #RealMadrid. https://t.co/5JeMR9l7Fh pic.twitter.com/7Un1y6RVgo

Spurs Web Opinion
I think Nunez might be put off by Harry Kane’s presence at Spurs as he will want to be the main man upfront for his next club. I expect Tottenham to bring in a versatile forward who can play across the front three rather than an out-and-out centre-forward like the Uruguayan.
