The Telegraph have revealed that Paris Saint-Germain are considering replacing Mauricio Pochettino with another former Tottenham head coach in the form of Jose Mourinho.
Spurs brought in Mourinho to take over from Pochettino in 2019 and the appointment proved to be a disaster, with the Lilywhites finishing in seventh place in 2020/21 – the first time the club have failed to secure a top-six finish since 2009.
Despite AS Roma’s disappointing performances in the Serie A, the Portuguese coach guided the club to the Europa Conference League trophy in his first season in charge.
The Telegraph now claim that PSG are considering making a move for Mourinho, with Pochettino expected to depart over the coming days.
The report reveals that the Parisians initially targeted former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane but he remains reluctant to join the club and is instead expected to replace Didier Deschamps as the France boss after the World Cup this year.
The Ligue 1 club have parted ways with Sporting director Leanardo, with Luis Campos set to take over from the Brazilian.
Campos has worked together with Mourinho at Real Madrid and the 57-year-old was also linked with a move to Tottenham when Mourinho was in charge of the North London club (L’Equipe via 90min).
The Telegraph add that PSG’s Qatari owners believe that Mourinho’s impressive European record could aid the club in their quest to win their first ever Champions League title.
Spurs Web Opinion
For most clubs in the world, replacing Pochettino with Mourinho would be a backwards step, as Spurs found out.
While the latter has had a much more illustrious coaching career than the Argentine, the game has evidently moved on and the kind of football his teams tend to play, is not conducive to getting consistent results anymore.
However, having said that, I believe that PSG are arguably the one club in the world where it would make sense to bring in Mourinho for Pochettino.
The Ligue 1 giants have plenty of big egos in the dressing room and need a larger than life personality like Jose to get them all onside and playing for the team.
Besides, PSG are guaranteed to win Ligue 1 title anyway and so, their success and failure is defined by their performances in the Champions League.
Mourinho is arguably still one of the best in the world in getting results in big one-off matches, which might serve PSG well in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
