Djed Spence has certainly had a season to remember on loan at Nottingham Forest, having helped the club to clinch a 1-0 win against Huddersfield in the Championship Play-Offs to secure a return to the Premier League.
Djed Spence had a standout season with Forest while on loan from Middlesbrough. The 21-year-old claimed five assists and 3 goals (Transfermarkt)] in all competitions.
It is no surprise that Tottenham are looking to upgrade their squad, particularly in the wing-back positions. This is a trademark component of Conte’s 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 systems. The wing-backs push high up the pitch and allow the wingers to act as inside forwards alongside the striker. Ryan Sessegnon has already begun to show promise in this area. The wing-back’s crucial assist for Son’s goal against Liverpool at Anfield being one of the highlights of his season.
The recent acquisition of Ivan Perišić is great for rotation, and allows Sessegnon to develop further while being given time to properly rest and recover after matches. This will allow the young Englishman to hopefully avoid any injury issues which have previously plagued his development.
The right wing-back spots in the Spurs’squad are currently taken up by Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty. Both players did play crucial roles helping Spurs to secure a fourth place finish in the table
Matt Doherty registered two goals and 4 assists in 15 appearances [Transfermarkt] up until his injury at Villa, while Emerson Royal provided a defensive masterclass against Liverpool to keep the game to a draw at Anfield. One of these two players would arguably have to be sold in order to accommodate the arrival of Spence. That decision lies with Conte and the club after analysing which of the two would benefit the squad more.
It has been previously reported that Conte has made Spence one of his key summer transfer targets (The Northern Echo)) after such a promising stint on loan at Forest.
Spence’s offensive output would improve Spurs’ ability to score goals, and he would be supported by Cristian Romero at RCB. Romero has already proved himself able to defend at the highest level while also being able to contribute offensively with a well-timed pass in the build up from the backline.
Spence stll has plenty of room for development and the quality of his performances will only improve with time. His potential wing-back partnership with fellow young Englishman Sessegnon could be crucial for both the future of Tottenham and the England national team, respectivaly.
As of now, Djed Spence is still a Middlesbrough player and a deal is yet to be done, however, it only appears a matter of time before a club secure his services this summer.
