Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Yves Bissouma will significantly influence Tottenham Hotspur this season and Rihcarlison will provide something different.
Tottenham signed Bissouma from Brighton and Hove Albion in a deal worth £25million, plus an additional £10m in performance-related bonuses (Sky Sports).
Spurs have put the likes of Harry Winks, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso up for sale as they look to restructure the midfield this summer (Tom Barclay via GiveMeSport).
Antonio Conte no longer considers the trio in his plans for the future (Daily Mail), having left them out of pre-season and the opening Premier League fixture against Southampton.
Bissouma will compete against players such as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and Oliver Skipp for a starting spot in the midfield this season.
With just two places to fight for if Conte sticks to his current formation, the Mali international will need to be at his best to earn regular game time moving forward.
However, Ferdinand thinks Bissouma will face no issues in becoming a Spurs regular as he believes the 25-year-old has the quality to make a ‘difference’ for the London-based outfit.
The former England centre-back also argued that Tottenham have had the best transfer window out of any Premier League club.
Speaking on the Vibe with Five podcast on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “Kulusevski, him and Bentancur are two wicked signings. You saw last season, they came in and hit the ground running.
“I would argue that Spurs have had the best window. Bissouma starts in that team, and is going to make a difference, Richarlison gives them another dimension.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
Bissouma certainly earned himself a name over the past few years by becoming one of the best in his position under Graham Potter for Brighton.
Spurs’ summer signing played a major role in helping Brighton to get to where they are today with his consistent displays, so Ferdinand’s expectation for him to continue that level at Tottenham is understandable.
It is also arguable that Bissouma can build on that form by improving himself under someone like Conte. Perhaps the Italian can help Bissouma to become a more well-rounded midfielder, with his current strengths heavily siding towards his defensive contributions, dribbling and pressing abilities, leaving room for growth in his progressive qualities.
