With the transfer window now shut, Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has been discussing the squad at his disposal. Despite several new arrivals, the Italian says he needs more signings to compete at the very top.
Spurs completed the majority of their transfer activity very early in the summer, bringing in the likes of Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, and Ivan Perisic. For many, these acquisitions signalled a positive step toward adding strength in depth to the squad.
Some sections of the Spurs fanbase were left disappointed by a lack of activity on deadline day, however. There were plenty of rumours as the window came to a close, linking the club to late moves for players such as Wilfred Zaha (The Athletic).
Nothing materialised on a quiet deadline day for Spurs though and it seems Conte still sees plenty of room for improvement within his squad. Specifically, Conte suggested the signing of Djed Spence was made with the future in mind, rather than for immediate impact.
In a press conference ahead of the game against Fulham, Conte shared his thoughts on the transfer window and what Spurs need to compete with the best of the best (via Football.London).
He said: “I consider that we spent money for Richarlison and Bissouma, because these two players play many games in the Premier League and now we are talking about two players who are ready to play.
“About Djed, I always talk about it being an investment for the club to sign a young player. When you sign a young player you know you have to wait, to work with him to try to improve. He is a good prospect, he is a perfect prospect for Tottenham.
“But then if we talk about trying to be competitive to win, for sure we need other signings. This has to be very clear. For sure, he will be a good player in the future for Tottenham.”

It’s no secret that Spurs are still a little bit behind the top teams in the league, and Conte is absolutely right that there is work to be done on this squad.
Bringing in another centre-back and a creative attacking player would certainly push Spurs closer to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, but it’s also important not to rush into any business, and be patient in building the squad too.
This summer has to be regarded as a success for Tottenham, having added genuine quality to the first team, offloading those players who were not needed anymore, and having the likes of Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie on the books for the future too.
