Michael Owen believes that Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers sees himself as a manager of a top club like Tottenham Hotspur.
Rodgers has been linked with the Tottenham hot seat in the past, with some reports indicating last summer that he was the North London club’s first-choice managerial target to replace Jose Mourinho (90 min).
However, the 49-year-old distanced himself from the Spurs hot seat at the time, declaring his intention to continue with his project at Leicester (talkSPORT).
Spurs eventually hired Nuno Espirito Santo, who ended up lasting just four months in the job before being replaced by Antonio Conte.
Things have not gone according to plan for Rodgers at Leicester since, with the Foxes finishing in eighth place last term, a far cry from the previous two seasons when they were battling it out to qualify for the Champions League.
Leicester have had a disastrous start to the new campaign and are currently winless in their first six games and rooted to the bottom of the table.
Owen has now claimed that Rodgers is resigned to leaving the King Power Stadium as he sees himself managing a more ambitious club like Tottenham or Arsenal.
The former Liverpool striker told Premier League Productions (04/09/22 at 7:25 pm): “I think this isn’t what is set on the tin for Brendan Rodgers. He came to a football club that had ambition and was going to spend money.
“He is a successful coach that nearly won the Premier League with Liverpool. He went up to Scotland and won trophies. I don’t think he saw himself managing down the bottom end of the table.
“I think he sees himself as an Arsenal manager, a Liverpool manager or a Tottenham manager. I don’t think he is too happy. I feel he is resigned to ‘well, no one’s spent anything and we aren’t investing’.
“I don’t think he is happy with the ambition of the club and it will be interesting to see during these next few weeks how all of this goes.”

Rodgers should really have taken the Tottenham job last summer when his stock was high. His career trajectory, as well as that of the likes of Ralph Hasenhuttl, serves as a lesson to managers like Thomas Frank, Patrick Viera, Graham Potter and others, to strike while the iron is hot.
We have seen time and again that a manager’s stock can fall considerably in just a few months, and they might only get offered a top job once. However, Tottenham should be delighted that they missed out on Rodgers’ last summer, given that the club ended up with Conte not too long after.
